How to Get a Clean Instrumental for Cover Songs

June 25, 2026 · 1 min read

Recording a cover or performing one live is so much easier with a clean instrumental to sing over. Here’s how to get one.

The steps

  1. Upload the original song to Vocal Studio.
  2. Run Studio HD separation.
  3. Open the Instrumental tab and listen all the way through.
  4. Download it as WAV for the best quality to perform or record with.

Match the key and tempo

The instrumental comes out in the original key and tempo, which is usually what you want for a faithful cover. If you need a different key, change it afterwards in any audio editor — separate first, then adjust.

Trim to the section you need

Performing only the chorus for a reel or a class? Use the Song Cutter: pick your start and end points and export just that slice. It works on whichever track you have selected, so you can trim the instrumental, the vocal, or the original.

Be fair about copyright

Separation is a fantastic tool for practice, learning and personal projects. If you plan to publish or monetise a cover, remember the underlying song is still owned by its writers. Cover licences are usually cheap and easy to get for online releases — sort that out before you post, and you can enjoy your cover with peace of mind.
